Theme
We’re not big fans of wrestling, we’ll admit. Our sports taste range to sports that require a ball and team coordination, but we can understand the craze sports can bring. And there’s no sport that has created its own unique culture the way professional wrestling has done in Mexico. Wrestlers wear masks and take cool nicknames upon themselves. You have entire families dedicated to the craft, and a wrestler losing their mask is the ultimate loss.
Microgaming decided they wanted a slice of that lucha libre with their latest release with Lucha Legends, which offer Super Wilds and free spins, as well as the option to Power up by doubling your wager. Symbols include playing card icons J, Q, K and A, as well as symbols with unique artwork such as the silly looking judge, a sexy woman holding the round sign, and four luchadores ready to risk it all for the recognition – Sal & Pepe, Burro, El Diablo and Martio. A red symbol with the slot’s logo is the Wild, which can transform into a yellow icon with the word Wild written on it, which is a super Wild. Scatters are represented by a luchadore mask painted on top of a wrestler’s winning belt.
Developer
Microgaming is an industry giant that a very select few have ever come close to reaching on the same level. They began operating the first true online casino in the world in 1994, and saw the writing on the wall all the way back in 2004, when they launched their first mobile casino software, well aware it would overtake personal computers and laptops someday.
The company is set in the Isle of Man, and always remained forward thinking, allowing them to remain in their comfortable position, making sure each of their games receives plenty of attention. Microgaming partners with a great number of studios, publishing their games under their umbrella, which has allowed otherwise unknown developers to break into the mainstream and have their games enjoyed by millions.
How to Play it
The title is played on a 5×3 playing field with 25 fixed paylines, meaning gamblers cannot turn them on or off to adjust their bet. Instead, you can only do so by tapping the plus and minus on the bet screen, which allows you to set a wager between $0.50 up to $75 per spin.
While this is a solid betting range that should please high rollers and more casual gamblers in equal amounts, we’re not too pleased that you have to pay $0.50 for 25 paylines, as it effectively doubles the minimum bet for no reason. The game has a low to medium volatility, so we can’t really see that as an excuse, either. The title has an Autoplay section, which only allows you to set how many auto spins you want to play, with no ability to set loss or win limits, or thresholds if a single win goes above a certain number.

Special Features
At random, both during normal gameplay and free spins, super Wilds can trigger, during which one of the luchadores will smash onto the reels and turn any Wilds into Super Wilds. This is accompanied by one of two special features. Either two adjacent symbols turn Wild or Super Wilds get a 2x or 3x multiplier.
If you turn on Power Up mode, your wager is doubled, but as a result, Super Wilds are more likely to occur. The features coming with Super Wilds are also boosted – you get four adjacent symbols turning into Wilds and Super Wild win are multiplied by 3x or 5x. You also get both of the special features, instead of just one.
Finally, collecting three Scatters at the same time in the first, third and fifth reel rewards ten free spins. There’s no extra bonus added to it, beyond the fact you have the possibility of retriggering the feature with two or three Scatters, which reward one extra free spins or ten extra free spins, respectively.
Maximum Payouts
The largest jackpot you can win with Power Up mode on is worth 2200x the wager, while it falls down to 960x the bet if you play without Power Up mode. The title has a low to medium volatility, meaning scores happen frequently, but wins are often not particularly great to make up for the fact you’re seeing a steady stream of wins. The game’s RTP is 96.38%, which is above average for video slots.
Summary
Put the whole thing together, and you have an amazing title on your hands. We have some minor peeves here and there, but those are far outweighed by the advantages offered by this game. If what you’ve read so far in our review sounds interesting, give Lucha Legends a try. Just keep your mask on, and your wallet secure!
